SCIENTIFIC MEDICAL JOURNAL "LUZ Y VIDA" AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE DISSEMINATION OF BIOMEDICAL AND SOCIAL RESEARCH

Sr. Editor:

Sin duda alguna, la edición de una Revista Médico Científica representa un esfuerzo enorme, por una parte debido a las normas y reglamentaciones internacionales vigentes que se exigen con rigurosidad antes de su publicación y por otra parte, porque la producción científica en nuestro medio es insuficientemente estimulada y asumida por los profesionales del sector salud. Ambas situaciones afectan innegablemente el futuro y el tiempo de vida de una revista científica, pero al mismo tiempo un medio de difusión de éste tipo resulta a la vez imprescindible como eje motivador de la difusión de conocimientos y evidencias desarrolladas en los establecimientos de salud y en las comunidades beneficiarías del accionar médico.

La Revista Médico Científica "Luz y Vida" asumió este difícil reto y ha lanzado al medio local un primer número con artículos originales que reflejan el perfil epidemiológico actual de nuestro Departamento; además de artículos de revisión y presentaciones de casos clínicos que también muestran la amplia diversidad de situaciones clínicas identificadas en hospitales de Cochabambay del extranjero.

El primer desafió que deben enfrentar las revistas científicas médicas es garantizar su permanencia y sostenibilidad por el mayor tiempo posible, lo que implica no solo contar con un equipo Editorial y de Revisión Técnica, sino también identificar y asegurar fuentes de financiamiento que permitan cubrir los altos costos de la publicación.

El segundo desafío es lograr equilibrar la publicación de artículos originales que trasciendan de la descripción epidemiológica básica hacia tipos de investigación analítica y experimental, aunque este aspecto es muy dependiente del grado de desarrollo de la investigación y de la iniciativa de los investigadores de nuestro medio, los que en muchos casos realizan sus actividades con sus propios recursos y con poco acceso a las fuentes de información de nuestros hospitales, que hasta ahora no han identificado la producción científica como una de sus funciones institucionales.

En la actualidad se ha visto un gran desarrollo de la investigación social y cualitativa, que a causa de su enfoque naturalista y constructivista, todavía es considerada una producción "no científica", olvidando que uno de los propósitos fundamentales de la investigación, es contribuir a la solución de problemas que aquejan a nuestra sociedad y a nuestras poblaciones beneficiarías de la atención médica, por lo que un tercer desafío de esta revista será el incorporar paulatinamente este tipo de investigaciones en sus futuras ediciones y números.

En este contexto contar con varias revistas científicas de difusión de conocimientos como la presente, no debe ser visto como una duplicación o dispersión de esfuerzos, sino como una verdadera contribución para ampliar y asegurar el acceso a nuestra propia comunidad científica a canales de difusión de alto nivel para nuestro medio regional y nacional.

Certainly, the publication of a Scientific Medical Journal represents an enormous effort. On the one hand, due to the international rules and regulations that are rigorously required before the publication. On the other hand, the scientific production in our country is under- encouraged and undertaken by health professionals. These both situations undeniably affect the future and the lifetime of a scientific journal. However one broadcasting means such as this is both essential and motivating axis of the diffusion of knowledge and evidence developed in health institutions and beneficiary communities of medical action.

Scientific medical journal "Luz y Vida" has taken on this difficult challenge and has launched the first edition with original articles that reflect the current epidemiological profile of our department. In the same way to review articles and clinical case reports also show the wide variety of clinical situations identified in hospitals in Cochabamba and abroad.

The first challenge faced by medical journals is to ensure its permanence and sustainability as long as it is possible, which means not only having a team of Editorial and Technical review, but also identify and secure sources of funding to cover the high publication costs.

The second challenge is balancing the publication of original articles that go beyond basic epidemiological description toward analytical and experimental research. However this aspect is very dependent on the degree of development of research and the initiative of researchers. In many cases they operate with their own resources and they have little access to hospital's data. Until now institutions have not identified scientific production as their institutional functions.

Today there has been a great development of social and qualitative research. However, because of its naturalistic and constructivist approach, this production is still considered "unscientific". Forgetting that one of the fundamental purposes of research is to help the solution of problems that afflict our society and our target populations. So that a third challenge of this medical journal will be to gradually incorporate this type of research in future editions.

In this context to count on several scientific journals that disseminate this knowledge, it must not be seen as a duplication or dispersion of effort, but as a real contribution to expand and ensure access of our scientific community to high level dissemination channels for our regional and nacional context.
