Abstract The pandemic due to COVID-19 generated significant effects in all sectors, particularly in education, health and the socioeconomic sector in general. In this sense, the need to know the main affectations that were affecting university students was raised, since deficiencies were observed in academic performance in mathematics and statistics courses. For this, a random sample of 64 students from the first-year statistics course of the Medical Records and Health Statistics career was studied, who completed an online instrument and whose responses were analyzed using the Excel and SPSS programs. The results showed that the students are in a greater proportion of 20 years and older, with family responsibilities, affected mainly by unemployment and economic problems
