It attempts to characterize the use of antibiotics in the inpatient unit of the Health Fund Private Banking (CSBP) in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra during the first quarter of 2010. Of 373 patients, 255 (68%) were treated with antibiotics and 118 (32%) did not receive antibiotics. The genre that consumed more antibiotics was female with 176 patients (69.02%) with an age range the ages of 20-39 years whereas that male genre with the same age ranges with 36 patients (25%). The criterion most used for the antibiotics was clinical with 208 (81.57%) and microbiological with 47 (18.43%) The most used medical service for the antibiotics was the OB-GYN with 94 (36.86%) followed by Internal Medicine with 92 (36.08%) and Neonato-logy was the service that did not use any antibiotics. The purposes for antibiotics used primarily were prophylactic type with 156 patients (61.17%), empirical with 19 (7.45%) and specific with 80 (31.37%). Likewise, theconditions in which mostsuch drugs used were: Diseases linked to pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum with 84 cases (32.94%), digestive diseases with 47 (18.43%) and infectious and parasitic diseases with 40 (15.69%), other conditions exist with smaller percentages. It was determined that the most commonly used manner of administration was oral 185 (72.55%) followed by the intravenous 64 (25.10%) and the therapeutic group most widely used was betalactamic 176 (69.02%), then there are the quinolones 29 (11.37%) and other groups with lower percentages.
