Abstract During the surface surveys in the lower Valley of the Suches River, northeast of the Titicaca Lake in Bolivia, we have come across that a great percentage of the archaeological pottery collected is affected by lichens. Considering that these organis-ms cause a bias in the data in the analysis of these ceramics since is not possible to observe with detail certain characteris-tics of the fragments of pottery. Whaf s more the thallus fibers of the lichen penétrate in the surface of the ceramic, causing the disaggregation of the material with the passing of time. Ac-tions were taken in order to clean the collection, intervening it with a chemical-mechanic cleaning; the procedures and results are exposed in this document.
