Abstract: Brazil has had several cases of inadequate closure of mines during its history. In the last decades, however, the cases of restoration of the mines, including a new use of the area, are frequent. The main reason for this has been more demanding and more active legislation. This article describes the case of restoration of the closed underground mine of Passage in Mariana (MG) for use as a structure of historical and adventure tourism. In this case study, six main areas of impacts are considered: Impact on the physical, biological and ecological environment, impact on alternative use values of the area; impact on quality of life; impact on cultural and social values; impact on economic and sustainable development.
