Abstract Among the environmental impacts of mining, including the underground modality, and also in the area of civil construction, is the acid mine drainage (DAM). Important works have been carried out with the intention of avoiding the generation or treatment of AMD in the Brazilian regions. The main alternatives considered are dry coverings (widely used), alkaline additives and active treatment of DAM. Another option is the concentration / isolation of sulphides. With the desulfurization of the mining tailings preliminary to final disposal, the potential for acidity generation, and consequently the leaching of the metais, are considerably reduced, resulting in significant environmental and economic gains. In view of the above, the present work sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the dry cover system with civil construction rubble, in different proportions, as a way to minimize or avoid the triggering of AMD. For this purpose, experiments were carried out on laboratory leaching columns, which evidenced a reduction of more than 90% in the acid generating potential of DAM, characterizing a promising alternative in the remediation of acid mine drainage.
