SOUX, María Luisa. Notes for a History of coffee in the Yungas of La Paz. Historia [online]. 2017, n.37, pp. 43-74. ISSN 2519-0253.
This article seeks to establish certain reference points for under-standing the history of coffee in Bolivia, especially in the Yungas of La Paz region. Today, coffee cultivation is considered an alternative to coca production and ithasbeen thefocus ofanumberof "alternative development" projects. Its origins in Bolivia go back to the first half of the nineteenth century, and towards the end of the century it was seen as a potentially successful export product. During the twentieth century, it became one of the preferred products for land-lords and after the Agrarian Reform it was an important crop in the peasant economy in Yungas. However commercialization and export were controlled by large entrepreneurs who reaped great prof-its. In spite of the power of the big coffee-growers, Bolivian coffee had a minuscule role in international markets and it was not until the emergence of "select" coffees and solidarity markets that the Bolivian coffee economy began to achieve more success.
