Abstract Rationale: A need has been identified to contribute to the control of vehicular plates in road tolls and also in the traffic control strategies of the Transit entity. The objective of this research is to demonstrate that artificial vision and image processing are suitable for the recognition of objects, in particular, the recognition of vehicle plates. We worked on the implementation of an algorithm for the detection of vehicle plates, using different methods of image processing, which are: pre-processing, noise elimination, segmentation, morphological operations, Canny edge detection and calculation of regions, in where it starts with a front or rear plate of the vehicle which goes through processes of study in the Matlab tool, giving us a result of plate detection by the implemented processes, using the Canny algorithm, in 86%.
