ABSTRACT To assess the microbiological quality of water used ininseminationdoses(DIs)forswines, threecycles were sampled in six Swine Artificial Insemination Centers (CIAs) located in Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre and Santa Catarina (Brazil). Eighteen water samples were evaluated in NutrientAgarfor Colony Forming Units of Total Aerobic Mesophillic Bacteria (CFU/ml BMAT); then MacConkey Agarfor Colony Forming Units of Total Coliform Organisms (CFU/ml OCT); and Colilert for Escherichia coli. All water samples (before purificaron) showed <1.1 most probable number/100ml of Escherichia coli. The BMAT means ranged from 0.1 log CFU/ ml (after purification, central E) to 3.5 log CFU/ml (before purification, central F) (P>0.05). The OCT means ranged from 0.16 log CFU/ml to 2.78 log CFU/ml; the CIAs D y F were the most polluted (P>0.05). The BMAT mean in swine semen samples ranged from 1.75 log CFU/ml to 3.79 log CFU/ml; whereas, the DIs showed values from 0.73 log CFU/ml and 2.88 log CFU/ml BMAT. The CIAs F showed a higher mean compared with the other ones (P<0.05). As a conclusion, the water used in the six CIAs has a good microbiological quality and it does not influence in the BMAT or OCT means of the DIs prepared with this water. Nevertheless, the increasing of the bacteria is probably due to the environment pollution during the diluents or DIs preparation.
