Abstract We give a basic historical introduction to cryptography for those unfamiliar with number theory. After treating a few ancient cryptosystems, we move to the problem of creating an encryption function whose inverse is difficult to find, and show how the most well-known solution - the RSA cryptosystem - is basedon mathematics from 300BC to the present.
