ABSTRACT Renal failure is a condition that affects the internal regulation of the body, preventing excretory, metabolic and endocrine functions that are performed from the kidneys, resulting in deterioration not only in the kidney, but also in the body function, due to the accumulation of nitrogenous elements and the imbalance that occurs between water and electrolytes. There are two types of kidney failure: first, acute renal failure, which may be transient and reversible, the second type, chronic renal failure is permanent and irreversible. Both show similar features but will manifest differently depending on the characteristics of the individual who possesses it. These differential factors have much importance on age and type of failure to submit. A common feature for all patients is malnutrition. For this reason it is suggested in these patients, a diet that meets the calorie and protein requirements of the body. Besides food should contribute to the elimination of the accumulated producís in the body, especially if the patient is performing complex treatments such as hemodialysis . For children with kidney failure, the diet should be related to normal development.
