Abstract We have conducted a study of public spaces of the Railway District Sucre because of its spatial characteristics and its urban setting, considering in this review opposing urban criteria as a possible theoretical basis of the proposal and its impact on the perception of public space. To accomplish this three activities have been carried out: The first activity was a review of urban theories grounded in the relationship of opposites urban criteria. In this regard it has been emphasized on the approach conducted on the "twin phenomena" for it is a primary source and recurring reference of many other theoretical works referred to the same criteria. The second activity has focused on analyzing the current situation of the study área, guiding this analysis to the determination of opposite dual elements that have influenced the urban structuring of the Railway District, the generation of its characteristic public spaces and their spatial qualities. The third shows the result obtained raising three pairs of opposite urban concepts as part of the structure of the neighborhood, its environment and its spaces, these are: Connection - Break Edge - Center Individual - Collective We understand these as opposition guidelines in urban terms, applicable in urban producís considered in theoretical, practical and reflective terms.
