GIMENEZ T., Alberto; FLORES Q., Ninoska y UDAETA V., Enrique. ROGELIO CHUQUI CRESPO TACANA WISE MAN DISTINGUISHED WITH THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR HONORIS CAUSA BY THE UNIVERSIDAD MAYOR DE SAN ANDRES. Investig@ UMSA [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.2, pp. 89-104. ISSN 2220-7139.
In public event, the October 1, 2010, the Universidad Mayor de San Andres on the basis of resolution No 455/10 of HCU 22-09-2010, issued as a result of documented request from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biochemical, initiated by the Area Pharmaceutical Chemistry of The Research Institute For Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biochemistry, on the eve of his 84 years, Don Rogelio Crespo Chuqui, Founder of the Tacana Community of Santa Rosa de Maravilla, was awarded the degree of "Doctor Honoris Causa", by his contribution to the study of medicinal plants ofthe Tacana ethnic group from the Amazon region. Studies on medicinal plants from the Tacana culture, started in 1996 by the multidisciplinary project "Environmental Conservation through the ethnopharmacological and Ethnobotany assessment in Bolivia II: Studies with The Tacana." This project granted by the National Fund forthe Environment, was carried out underthe coordination of The Research Institute for Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biochemistry with the participation of the National Herbarium of Bolivia, the Institute for Chemical Research, both from the Faculty of Pure Sciences, The Bolivian Institute Height Biology, from the Faculty of Medicine and researchers from the French Cooperation in Bolivia. Between 1996 and 1999, an ethnobotanical inventory was made of some 250 plant species used by this ethnic group settled in the northern department of La Paz. Among the various laboratories, we evaluated some 150 species against bacteria, fungi and parasites of malaria, leishmaniasis and Chagas disease. About 15 species were studied biologically and chemically, in particular, to find alternative treatments for diseases prevalent in our country. The project involved more than 40 informants from 16 Tacana communities. Research on traditional uses of species antiparasitic species, are still in force in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biochemistry at UMSA. Between 2000 and 2006, at The Research Institute for Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biochemistry with the support by of various International Cooperation Agencies we concluded chemical bioguided studies, and completed preclinical species with Evanat (Galipea longiflora). Since 2007 to date, with support from the Swedish Cooperation, we are developing clinical trials in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis at the Hospital of Palos Blancos. Since 2009, we are validating the traditional use in the treatment of intestinal parasites with UMSA-IDH founds and the OSCAR project. The fruitful work, ofmore than 15years with this culture, andin particular the community of Santa Rosa of Maravilla, thanks to the active involvement ofits founder, as a guide to the recognition of various medicinal species, has allowed the return to society, the results of our investigations. In recognition ofthe Tacana culture, the UMSA awarded for the first time, this honorary distinction to a wise native man.
