CARPIO DEHEZA, Gonzalo. CLINICAL EPIDEMIOLOGIC ANALYSIS ON ADVERSE REACTIONS TO BENZNIDAZOL LIKE CHAGAS TREATMENT, IN YOUNGER THAN 15 YEARS OLD, TOTORA, APRIL-JUNE 2009. Rev. Méd.-Cient. Luz Vida [online]. 2010, vol.1, n.1, pp. 9-15. ISSN 2219-8032.
Chagas disease is a parasitism produced by flagellate protozoa "Trypanosome cruzi". This is an endemic illness in our means and it affects several groups of age which includes younger and older than 15 years. Chagas disease's diagnosis is possible with clinical data, origin of patient and background to contact with vector. Complementary examinations contribute to a better diagnosis. For treatment is used Benznidazol, a derivate nitroimidazolic, which blocks nucleic acid synthesis in a activated form, conjugating itself with DNA. Dose: 5-7 mg/kg/day. Adverse reactions: 11% irritability, 9% anorexia, 6% vomits, 3% headache, 2% leucopenia and pancytopenia. This is a analytic, descriptive, prospective and longitudinal investigation of population which includes younger than 15 years old patients with Chagas disease, these ones confirm by Totora's Hospital Laboratory and patients who were treated in this place. This investigation proves that 20-30% of patients treated with Benznidazol can suffer adverse reactions. These ones were frequently in women and there was not a big difference between affected systems. The adverse reactions were 20% pure nervous alteration, 20% nervous and digestive affectation, 16% cutaneous affectation and 12% neuromuscular affectation. If we take Birthplace like a factor, we can demonstrate that there are zones more endemic than others. Most of the patients with Chagas disease were from Anthakawa, Challa Chico and Totora
