Abstract This presentation ispart ofa wide research work which has been carried out during the 2015 and 2016years under one ofthe trends investigated by the Institute of Bolivian Studies (Instituto de Estudios Bolivianos de la Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación de la UMSA). Throughout thispaper, wepresent some antecedents thatguide our studies on linguistic variation which are presented in our native languages and in other socio-cultural and linguistic fields. Under this framework, we develop a review of general theories, dialectical and socio-linguistic investigations. Besides we cover some socio-cultural backgrounds which provide guidelines for going deeper on the phenome-na oflinguistic variation. Likewise, it is taken into account specific studies related to the Aymara dialectology which contribute to the understanding and explanation of those linguistic phenomena that are present in all languages.

Keywords : Linguistic variation; social and regional variation; urban dialectology; Aymara language; language and society.
