VIRGUETTI, Marcelo López. Dental discrepancy index determinaron in students of 4th and 5th year of odontolgy department at the Universidad del Valle, years 2010-2012-2013. Rev. Inv. Inf. Salud [online]. 2015, vol.10, n.24, pp. 10-14. ISSN 2075-6194.
Dental discrepancy is the positive or negative dif-ference between the available space of the peri-meter of the alveolar bone and the space required for eruption and proper alignment of the teeth. It is given by the sum of the widths mesial distal, mesial of the first permanent molar to mesial of the opposite side. At the Dental Clinic Univalle, Cochabamba, a prospective and descriptive research was performed in order to determine the existing dental discrepancy index and the type of treatment to solve it in 50 students of 4th and 5th year. Plaster models of dental arches of each of the students where measurements were performed to determine the discrepancy were prepared. The main results were: negative discrepancies greater than 8 mm to 12 students, negative discrepancies of less than 8 mm in 34 students and positive discrepancies in 4 students. The most required treatments were dental alignment and leveling followed by tooth wear. 100% of the studied cases had discrepancies and the most affected was the female sex unlike research in Cuba where only 44% had discrepancies and there was no significant difference in sex, this difference may be due to factors biotypological, hereditary and racial
