ARIAS, Edgar; BARRIENTES, Juan Carlos  y  SANCHEZ, Andrés. Mercados de servicios de polinización: una revisión general con énfasis en Latinoamérica y Colombia. CienciAgro [online]. 2017, vol.7, n.1, pp. 49-58. ISSN 2072-1404.

Abstract Pollination is adetermining process for agood part ofworld agricultural production. The provisión of pollination through theuseof managed hives isknown as pollination services and is a productive practice used increasingly by farmers worldwide. This work has thepurpose of making a documentary review about pollination services ata global level with a certain emphasis in Latin America and Colombia. Whatwas found isthatthepollination market originated asaresult ofadecrease inpollinators compared toanincrease in conventional agricultural production. Thesemarkets have appeared and thrived more in those countries with more technified agriculture andmore formal agribusinesses (North America, theEuropean Union andOceania). The supply of pollination services ismainlybased onmanaged hives of Apis mellifera andwild pollinators. Demand isbasedonknowledge of thebeneficial effect thatpollinators haveon increasing thequantity and quality of agricultural production, which in turn translates intohigher incomes. Pollination service prices vary due to supply and demand, transport costs of hives and the amount of honey production per hive. In Latin America, the countries that have and are developing this market are Argentina, Brazil, Chile and México. In Colombia, the pollination market has not yet started, butthere isgreat potential. However, before that, somevery important constraints must be overeóme thathave todo with the defensive-ness of bees, service contraets and the indiscriminate handlingof pesti cides.
