Abstract
PAGAN SANTANA, Liz M.. EXPERIENCE OF PROFESSIONAL LIBRARIANS IN THE DESIGN AND OFFERING OF ONLINE COURSES IN PUERTO RICO. Rev. Fuent. Cong. [online]. 2020, vol.14, n.64, pp. 14-19. ISSN 1997-4485.
Higher education in Puerto Rico rapidly integrates distance education (EAD) through multiple forms impacting various academic settings. In turn, the students and the competencies required of teachers, librarians and support staff require a reflection of the actions to be taken to satisfy these current trends. Faced with this reality, the public university is committed to the continuous development of the EAD and has managed the approval of different certifications, which offer the guidelines for offering courses or academic programs. Through the literature review, the documentation, implementation and concrete actions aimed at maximizing the academic offer are observed. In the case of academic libraries, whose main function is to satisfy students' need for information and research by supporting the academic curriculum, it is expected that they provide physical, virtual and human resources to strengthen the experience of the online course as well as the classroom course. This presentation will describe the experience of professional librarians in the creation and instructional design of online courses integrating library services and resources to strengthen information skills in students. The models used for the development of educational materials, course offering, evaluation and achievements will be explained. In addition, the impact of the courses on the academic programs offered by the institution at the higher level and its global approach to attract other communities in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean will be highlighted.
