Abstract The present work constitutes a survey carried out in the year 2017, in the framework of the research for my thesis of Master in Document Management, Transparency and Access to Information of the Autonomous University of Barcelona - ESAGED. The same seeks to know the status of the Documentary Classification in the Archives belonging to the National Archives System of Uruguay, bearing in mind that 11 years after the enactment of law 18220 that creates the National Archives System, there was still no study or statistics that will provide specific data about it. The need to know this specific reality is based on the importance of the Documentary Classification as a fundamental pillar in the development and implementation of an efficient and professional document management in the public archives, and therefore of the policies of access to information, transparency and accountability of the State. Collecting data through a survey applied to a sample determined a priori, on the total of subjects bound by the law of the National Archives System, it was possible to obtain specific data on the status of the Documentary Classification within the framework of the National Archives System, knowing in detail general data of the archives, the personnel that works in them, and of its general management, emphasizing obtaining details in what refers to the Documentary Classification and the Classification Charts, basic tool in the archival management of any documentary background. As a result of the present survey, not only is an identification of the state of the situation obtained, but a SWOT analysis of this reality is carried out, which may allow the elaboration of a series of recommendations and guidelines tending to facilitate, and in some way combine criteria to the time to apply the Documentary Classification and draw up Classification Charts in the National Archives System of Uruguay.
