Abstract The binding of the book object, is an artistic trade that has been transmitted from generation to generation until today. The bindings are structures of embellishment and protection with a fundamental mechanical aspect. Why and how of running your gear, it is studied in a historical, artistic and technical context in which the conservators / restorers occupy a privileged place allowing continually surprise us. The objective of this paper is to develop work actions that allows the conservation of the bound books that make up the America Collection of the Rare and Valuable Fund of the National Library of Cuba José Martí. Applying a methodology aimed at an orderly, systematic, proven and scientifically endorsed process for the preservation of heritage assets. Taking the minimum intervention criterion and Resolution 41/2009 of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Cuba (CITMA, acronym in Spanish) as principles. With the use of three substances, hydroxypropylcellulose (Klucel G), methylcellulose and a mixture of methylcellulose with white glue, there was an answer to the consolidation of the cover material of the bindings.
