Resumen
SUAREZ PATINO, Tatiana. One Pando more for art, several more Olivares for history about the restoration and enhancement of a lost portrait of Gral. José Manuel Pando painted by Mariano Florentino Olivares. Rev. Fuent. Cong. [online]. 2018, vol.12, n.59, pp. 38-43. ISSN 1997-4485.
Abstract Process of authentication and restoration of a canvas that at first glance suggested to be a Republican piece (dated 1895) together with the painter's signature, F. M. Olivares. Doubts about its origin were based on the technique and the painting quality. Olivares had mastered that brushstroke so typical of the portraits of the Republican period, but this picture lacked it, and not only that, but the palette was different as well. The painting was subjected to meticulous examinations, especially in the signature sector, and stratigraphic analysis, revealing that there were later layers with a composition alien to the materials of the time. The X-ray test confirmed that the work was repainted; it also revealed another painting below, with the pictorial quality expected of a Republican piece. After 8 months, the decisive moment arrived: the authentication process. Five works are known from the author, and this painting was not mentioned in the books, so it was possible that there were more than those already known. This is how the search began for the lost Olivares. Two more paintings by this author were found in the department of Oruro, in different collections. The signature was similar in all, therefore, they were originals. This research contributed to the expansion of the cataloging and production of Republican art in Bolivia.
