Abstract The paper analyzes the socio-cultural, labor and educational context of the cartonera publishers working in high-security prisons. The paper reflects on the incidence of literary, philosophical and journalistic workshops regarding the self-publication of cartonera books by prisoners. The paper also includes an approach to the scope of this kind of initiatives in those territories crossed by political conflicts. The different experiences presented in this paper provide an indication of the appropriation of the concept of "cartonera Publisher" by prisoners, whose publications link various problems generated by imprisonment, social inequality and exclusión
