Abstract
KIMBALL, Natalie. Bibliography of the history of unwanted pregnancy and abortion in Bolivia. Rev. Fuent. Cong. [online]. 2015, vol.9, n.40, pp. 17-21. ISSN 1997-4485.
Statistical data reveals that unwanted pregnancy and abortion have represented significant phenomena in Bolivia since at least the 1970s. Unwanted pregnancy and abortion have concerned government and public health officials primarily because of the impact of these on rates of maternal mortality, since women who confront unplanned pregnancy frequently recur to abortion. Due to the legal prohibition of abortion in Bolivia, these abortions frequently take place in unsafe conditions. For its part, unwanted pregnancy and abortional so concern the majority of Bolivian women (since three in five will terminate at least one pregnancy in their lifetimes), not to mention Bolivian families in general. Despite the frequency of unwanted pregnancy and abortion, these are not openly spoken about due to persistent social stigma against these phenomena. This literature review traces, in very broad strokes, the scholarship on unwanted pregnancy and abortion in Bolivia since the 1970s. In it sentirety, this literatura recommends the depenalization of abortion and the inclusion of abortion rights as a fundamental human right as the only viable solution to decreasing unsafe abortion.
