The global and regional rankings of universities reflect the competitiveness and prestige of higher education institutions. They represent the success of an institution’s academic, research, and innovative activities. This article analyzes the global and regional rankings of universities as well as the current status of Bolivian universities and the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés. We conducted a systematic search in Pubmed and Google Scholar. We obtained the results of the following rankings: THES 2010, SIR 2010-2012, ARWU 2010, and WWRU 2010. Results. Globally, Bolivian universities are not present in the THES 2010 and ARWU 2010 rankings. In the WWRU 2010 ranking, the Universidad Mayor de San Simon is ranked 2473rd and the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés 3444th. In the Ibero-America SIR 2010 ranking, the Universidad Mayor de San Andres, Bolivia, is ranked 243rd; among the “Top Ten Bolivian Universities” there are three private institutions. In the SIR 2011 compared to the SIR 2010, the general rankings of all Bolivian universities declined. As a conclusion we can say that bolivian universities are not represented in the world rankings and their position in Ibero American and Latin America is low, where the best ranked institution, UMSA, is ranked 243rd of the SIR 2010 ranking.
