JIMENEZ DASILBA, Ana Paula et al. Genotoxic evaluation of essential oil and ethanolic extract of Piper elongatum Vahl. BIOFARBO [online]. 2011, vol.19, n.2, pp. 13-20. ISSN 1813-5363.
Genotoxic studies of the essential oil and ethanol extract of Piper elongatum Vahl was conducted by testing in vivo somatic mutation and recombination (SMART), which employs Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly). Two types of crosses were used with genetic markers flr3 and mwh. The Standard cross (ST) and high bioactivation cross (HB), was employed, as a positive control mitomycin C (MMC) was used. The results were analyzed using statistical Kastenbaum-Bowman (α = 0.05) and they suggest that the ethanol extract of Piper elongatum Vahl at concentrations below 100mg/ml, and the essential oil at concentrations below 0.5% (w / v), do not produce genotoxic damage detected by the SMART test.
