The acid mine drainage (AMD) are characterized for extreme acid and high concentration of heavy metals and sulfate. Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) reduce sulfate oxidizing organic matter for production of hydrogen sulfide and bicarbonate. Bioremediation consist in insoluble heavy metal precipitation with sulfide and alkalinizing the environment due to the formation of bicarbonate. Several sludge samples taken from Bolivian Andean region were studied in acid conditions through the establishment of the Winogradsky column. Sulfate-reducing zone was inoculated in anaerobic conditions and pH 4 with different carbon sources, agricultural wastes among them. Two acidophilic sulphate-reducing consortia were established to be applied in bioreactors for hydrogen sulfide production in acid conditions. The establishment of bioremediation system in these conditions allows the direct treatment of acid mine drainage using agricultural wastes as oxidized matter.
