MUNOZ-MEDINA, Carlos E; MENDOZA-RONDON, Kristy P  y  OROZCO-RODRIGUEZ, Indira D. Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of arteriovenous fístulas of patients with chronic kidney disease stage 5, Bolivar-Venezuela. SCIENTIFICA [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.2, pp. 10-13. ISSN 1813-0054.

Renal replacement therapy partially substitutes kidney function extracting blood through an arteriovenous fístula type vascular access. It is the union of an artery and a vein. This procedimient is performed by the vascular surgeon and is made usually in nondominant arm. Objective: To determine clinical and epidemiological characteristics of arteriovenous fístula in patients with chronic kidney disease stage 5 in the Department of Nephrology of University Hospital Ruiz y Paez in Bolivar, Venezuela. Method: A descriptive, retrospective, no experimental studiecross section in patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease stage 5 who were attended in the Department of Nephrology of the University Hospital Ruiz y Paez, Bolivar-Venezuela from february 2007 to february 2015, with arteriovenous Fistula. Results: In a sample of 80 patients the most common age was between 50 to 59 years old. The most common cause of chronic kidney disease was Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension. Also, the most common type of vascular access was left Radial. The duration of the most common vascular access was less than 1 year, and the most frequent complication was thrombosis. Conclusion: The arteriovenous fístula is an alternative for permanent vascular access, for patients who need hemodialysis. It is atechnique little known by surgeons. So this topic needs to be analyzed deeper in order to give to patients the best option to improve their quality of life.
