ABSTRACT Introduction: Human beings have a great dependence on their visual system to devel-op within the society, so the general popula-tion requires adequate visión to facilítate their physical, mental, social and cultural development. Objective: Determine preva-lence of refractive errors in school-age chil-dren ranging between 8 and 12 years oíd at the center of the country. Materials and methods: This is an observational, descrip-tive, cross-sectional, non experimental study, where evaluation of visual acuity and refraction exams was performed to the study group, which one consisted of all children aged 8 to 12 years oíd school John Celio Secaira in Bolívar Province. Resulted: After completing this study we determined that 76.1596 of the study population areemme-tropic, while a 23.8596 presents refractive problems, and a 1-5396 of this group has severe ametropia. Conclusions: Although the incidence of refractive disorders was low in this study, is vital detection and proper treatment of the same, to prevent the development of the same or subsequent complications.
