    Introduction: Self-medication is defined as the use of drugs without a prescription and on the initiative of individuáis. With a prevalence close to 60% in developed countries. Objective: To evalúate the current status of self-medication in the adult population in two districts of Coronel Oviedo, May 2014. Subjects and Methods: Observational, descriptive cross-sectional study with a non probabilistic approach in adult population of the district Azucenaand Gral E. Diaz sampling of Coronel Oviedo. Interventions: The residents of the two neighborhoods were previously informed about the objectives of the study and those who agreed continued to fill the survey. The choice of the two neighborhoods was random among the 10 districts of the city. Data were collected by means of a closed survey containing the variables of interest. The results are expressed in frequency tables and prevalence. Results: Included 360 subjects aged 18 to 78 years (41.98 ± 16.62), of which 65.6% are female included. 48.3% self medical, 28.3% considered necessary medical consultation. The 55% that it is qualified to prescribe pharmaceutical medications. 75% say that self-medication is a risky practice. The most common drugs consumed without prescription painkillers were 66.3% and 17.4% Antiflu. Conclusión: The overall self-medication in the two districts is 48.3%; Azucena districts 39% and 60% in the General Diaz districts. Analgesics were the most consumed drugs without a prescription.
