The autoimmune diseases are those in which the immune system reacts to body components (proteins) as if they were foreign substances, either by producing antibodies or through another type of reaction. In most autoimmune diseases is unknown the cause of formation of autoantibodies. The treatment of autoimmune diseases involves immunosuppression, mainly with steroids, but also are used other drugs such as methotrexate, azathioprine, ciclosporine, ciclofosfamide, etc. Today is being tested, moreover, plasmapheresis, a technique which passes the patient's blood by an external system that eliminates the gammaglobulina fraction of the blood protein that contains antibodies. An appropriate handling from the start can help improve the prognosis of pemphigus that despite not being a frequent problem, patients are at risk of complications with or without treatment that affect quality of life.
