    Abstract

GRUDNER CARRANZA, Erick C.. RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE VANADIUM REDOX FLOW SECONDARY BATTERY (VRFB). Rev. Tecnológica [online]. 2024, vol.20, n.26, pp. 9-27. ISSN 1729-7532.

The paper refers to an electrochemical application of vanadium redox couples in different oxidation states, which convert, store and return chemical energy to electricity and vice versa. Phenomenology manifested in a two-compartment device joined by a porous ion-exchange membrane and laminar carbon electrodes, where electrolytes continuously wet and flow the electrodes. On the device and its electrical applications from 1986 to the present have been carrying out various research on the materials of electrodes, geometric arrangement of cell of larger area and minimum thickness that allows to group unit cells (stacks), and similarly to gather these in series circuits or to generate greater power, or better capacity energy and lifespan; minimizing drift losses, overpotentials and optimizing matter and energy transfer between flowing redox couples. Accordingly, describing the most important aspects about the research and development of VRFB secondary batteries; it is concluded, that this technological knowledge can be very useful to store energy from redox couples of vanadium, harnessing wind and photovoltaic energy.

Keywords : Secondary cell; stack design; energy capacity; porous carbon electrode three-dimensional phenomenology of mass and energy transport; serpentine and interdigit channels; BFRV prototypes.
