Abstract

Undernourished fetus also known with intrauterine growth retard, undernourished in uterus, under weight for gestation age; is the one with 10 points below its corresponding percentile for gestation age weight. There are implied factors of risk in the recently born with intrauterine growth retard; fetal, maternal, obstetric and environmental factors. The following report is a non experimental, descriptive and prospective, non probabilistic type of sample study. It is important to know the risk factors in the recently born with intrauterine growth retard due to the high incidence in our environment and the problems and complications it is exposed to, which is the reason why it should be recognized as a first magnitude public health problem. The main objective of this research is to determine the 10 main risk factors that influenced in the recently born with intrauterine growth retard admitted in the Neonatological Service of "San Juan de Dios" General Hospital, Oruro, between the months of March 2001 and June 2002. Results: The 10 main risk factors are: 1. Civil Status: 52 single mothers (74.2%) 2. Maternal malnutrition: 51 cases (72.8%) 3. Low socio-economical level: 50 of low level (71.4%) 4. Prenatal control: 45 mothers did not get it (64%) 5.Physical and psychological stress: 44 mothers (62.8%) 6. Education level : 29 cases with high school level (41.4%), 22: elementary level (31.4%), 12 illiterate (17.1%) and 7 mothers with higher education level (10%) 7.  Previous under weight recently born: 28 cases (40%) 8.   Previous placenta: 16 cases (22.8%) 9. Twin pregnancy: 12 cases (17%) 10. Eclampsia, pre-eclampsia, pregnancy toxemia: 11 cases (15.7%). Unlike other countries, risk factors like alcoholism, drug addiction, tobacco addiction did not have any repercussions in this research. Socio-economical and cultural risk factors are relevant in our environment.
