Resumen
SAGARNAGA, Jédu. Four New Radiocarbon Dates for Burial Towers of the Bolivian Highlands. Textos Antropológicos [online]. 2017, vol.18, n.1, pp. 157-166. ISSN 1025-3181.
The main purpose of this research was the radiocarbon dating of a total of four samples obtained in four different tombs located in the altiplano (the Andean high plateau). The tombs in question are of the type known as chullpar or burial tower. These were obtained from Condor Amaya (municipality of Umala, Province Aroma) and from Mikayani (municipality of Callapa, Province Pacajes), both located in the Department of La Paz. The results indícate that the use of the burial towers dates back to the Late Intermedíate Period (1.200-1.450 AD), but that this burial practice was also adopted by the Incas when the altiplano was under their rule. Later, and despite the fact that tombs of this type were banned by the Spaniards, indigenous people continued building burial towers, although of a more modest size and building technique than the pre-Columbian ones.
