Resumen
FAUCONNIER, Françoise. Rock art of the San Juan del Oro River (Southeastern Bolivia): Elements of dating and cultural adscription. Textos Antropológicos [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.1, pp. 33-55. ISSN 1025-3181.
In 2006, the author initiated a project to study rock art in the region of San Juan del Oro River. Five field seasons resulted in the inventory of more than 800 engraved rocks and 17 sites with paintings. The principal research questions involved the cultural affiliation and dating of such rock art manifestations. Most of them can probably be dated between the ninth and the sixteenth century (Chicha Culture). Others were realized during the Colonial and Republican periods. To establish a chronological sequence, the analysis of patina, superposition of elements, and evolution of iconography, style, and production techniques were considered. In a parallel approach, we used comparative chronological classifications established in northwest Argentina. The distribution of the rock art sites and the presence of petroglyphs in residential sites also provided information for dating such rock art manifestations.
