JOFRE P, Daniella. BELÉN: HERITAGE, COMMUNITY, LANDSCAPE, AND IDENTITY IN THE ARICA SIERRA. Textos Antropológicos [online]. 2005, vol.15, n.2, pp. 229-247. ISSN 1025-3181.
Confronting the situation ofthe Aymara people in Chile, archaeology has contributed to construct identities based in material cultures as well as in contemporary ethnic groups. Even though the archaeological record has being objectified by means of a modern science conception, the current notion of heritage has transformed it collectively in a "living" past, questioning the legitimacy of archaeological discourse andpractice. Within multiple, emergentvoices, a revitalized ethnic identity demands nationalandinternational recognition ofits indigenous heritage. In the community of Belén, current processes of ethnicity involve a social tension in regards to the control of material heritage within a cultural landscape that suggests a significant continuity between past and present. This paper focuses on a reflexive critique about indigenous and social archaeology, with consequences for a consistent valorization, preservation and conservation of archaeological heritage
