ANGELO, Dante. SOCIETIES, RIVERS AND ROUTES: TOWARDS A CRITICAL SYNTHESIS OF THE PREHISPANIC PAST OF THE SOUTHERN REGION OF BOLIVIA. Textos Antropológicos [online]. 2005, vol.15, n.2, pp. 139-154. ISSN 1025-3181.
A critical synthesis is presented of approaches to the past in the southern region of modern-day Bolivia. New data, derived from diverse investigations, are contrasted with those observations from regional archaeological work in the inter-Andean valley zone. The discussion centers on theoretical conceptualizations with which these societies have been interpretedandframedwithin different chronological periods. Several alternative interpretations are presented that consider the relations ofexchange between the different environmental regions of southern Bolivia (altiplano, valleys and Chaco lowlands), which might be the most important factor in the formation of the social entities that occupied these regions during the final phase of the Early Regional Developmentalperiod(950A.D.) untilthe moment of Inka expansion to the region (1470-1550A.D.)
