Investigations in the eastern Andean valleys of Chuquisaca-Bolivia establish that this region hada longandcomplexprehispanichistory, culminatingwith the documentedorganization Yampara. Our study, designed in order to investigate inter-regional interaction and expression of social identity, revealed considerable diversity in the ceramic styles, mortuarypractices, andfoodpatterns. These aspects can be attributed to the convergence ofgroupsfrom diverse regions and to the maintenance of a cosmopolitan ideal. Proposed hypotheses to explain the diversity in the Andean valleys generally have focused on models ofverticality and in establishing colonies. However, a regional survey and excavations in some sites permit us to observe that inter-regional migration, exchange, and commerce are the most plausible explanations for the cultural development in this area
