LEMUZ AGUIRRE, Carlos. ARCHAEOLOGICAL SETTLEMENT PATTERNS DURING THE OMASUYO PHASES EN SANTIAGO DE HUATA. Textos Antropológicos [online]. 2005, vol.15, n.2, pp. 77-89. ISSN 1025-3181.
ThelossofTiwanakupoweronthepeninsulaofSantiago deHuataandtheconsequentdeconstruction ofits organizational apparatus, gave way to aphase in which the localpopulation was dominated by small, nuclear populations independently administered. The base ofthese nuclei seem to have been founded on familial relations. This changes is reflected in the archaeological record by the placement and nature of settlements and in the evidence left by their subsistence economy. Later in time, the Inka presence in the region promoted a state of resistance and conflict with a partial gain in favor ofthe new economic potential ofthe western Andes. Although it did not equal the level of organization of Tiwanaku, it resulted in a notable growth of agricultural production in a large part ofthe peninsula. The present work shows an advance in the analysis of changes in settlement patterns in Santigao de Huata, between the Tiwanaku and Omasuyo-Inka phases. In this study, some ofthe principle characters of local and regional scope are presented here.
