Duringan ethnographic study inside an urban hospital, the author hada critical experience with thepain ofa woman during a clinical intervention. She compiled a clinical dossier withfive stories ofthe case: the story ofthe patient, her husband, a medical resident, the gynaecologist, and the story ofthe researcher. The author found that no matter what the differences were between the five stories, all ofthem contributed to the accomplishment ofa common effect: they erased, inside de discourse, the medical responsibility for the production ofpain.
