The Pukara of Caillama, located in the pre-cordilerra of Chapiquiña (Province of Parinacota, Chile), concentrates an important group of adobe chullpas. In this paper, I present the ceramic, architectonic, and spatial ordering contexts, inwhich these funeral structures are located, and reevaluate the evidence of adobe chullpas in other settlements ofthe Occidental Valleys. With these antecedents, adobe chullpas are then considered like an additional archaeological indicator, in the discussion ofinteraction andpolitical control ofthe western pre-cordillera during the Late Intermedíate Period (ca. AD 1000-1350). Finally, it isproposed that beyondfulfilling a doubtless ritual meaning about the conception ofthe deathfor the altiplanic societies, adobe chullpas must be observed like monuments created under a complex ideológica! dynamics between local andforeign groups ofpower, with similar social complexity.
