Abstract: The agrarian insurance in Bolivia is a State Policy considered in the Bolivian Political Constitution approved in 2009. The agrarian insurance was created through Law 144 in 2011. The Agrarian Universal Insurance "Pachamama" (SAUP, by its initials in Spanish), recognizes the plural nature of the economy and Bolivian agricultural production, which allows to host a series of modalities within it. The first modality is called Pirwa, whose target population is families that develop familyfarming inthe municipalitieswiththe highest levelsof poverty in Bpñvia. The Pirwa modality has been implemented in a novel way by integrating the knowledge of international insurance entities and the knowledge of Bolivian agricultural producers and technicians. In its third year, the Pirwa modality is becoming a national and international reference to ensure more than 272 thousand hectares of crops, worked by about 140 thousand families, in more than 5 thousand communities of 141 municipalities. The Pirwa modality protects up to 3 hectares of crops against climatic events of drought, frost, hail and flood. The compensation is Bs.1000.- per hectare, protecting 7 crops by 2015 and 9 crops by 2017 (potatoes, wheat, corn, broad beans, quinoa, oats, barley, alfalfa and beans).
