    Chronic malnutrition is a problem that plagues the population of many countries in the world. Every year 3.5 million children die from this cause. Latin America has one of the highest rates of malnutrition. In Bolivia, one in three children under 5 years of age suffers from malnutrition and the country ranks second after Haiti with the highest infant mortality rate in the continent. The objective of this descriptive and cross-sectional descriptive study was to determine the prevalence and characterize chronic malnutrition in children under 5 years of age in the town of Camargo, who attended their height and weight controls at the San Juan de Dios Hospital, among the months from July to December 2018. The data were obtained through a direct survey of the mothers of 76 children who presented chronic malnutrition in this period. Once the information was obtained, it was processed using statistical tools and frequency measurements were calculated. The prevalence of chronic malnutrition was 11.1%. The majority were male children between 6 to 24 months of age. The majority of the mothers of this children, were over 20 years old, did not have any type of education or had completed only primary, were engaged in housework and had a marital status of free union. Most had their own homes and access to basic services, as well as a monthly income that allowed them to satisfy basic needs. The majority of children received micronutrients and mothers used a bottle from an early age. It was concluded that the sociocultural factors and education of the mother were the most representative characteristics in the results of the investigation
