    Resumen

    Objective. Establish what is the meaning assigned to HIV / AIDS by students of Higher Education Center of Teachers Franz Tamayo in the municipality of Villa Serrano; August-September period of 2012. Material and methods. It was made a qualitative exploratory study in the phenomenological research tradition. It was also made a quantitative reflected in the statistical and demographic description of the population interviewed. It was interviewed 25 people elected until to the theoretical data saturation. The information was obtained through individual interviews using a guide semi-structured. Results and conclusions. People interviewed have predominantly between 19 and 23 years, they are male, single and are studying in the areas of social science and biologies. People interviewed believe that patients with HIV / AIDS have a psychological harm caused by the stigma of the disease that causes feeling of beeing discriminated by the society to which they belong, by their partner and even by their household, who do not provide the emotional support necessary. Moreover, people interviewed think the disease is incurable and highly contagious, often including unrealistic contagion mechanisms. The meaning assigned to the probability of being iII, ranges from resignation and/ or making an appropriate treatment to stay alive, and even suicide as a way out fast.
