Invasive cancer of the cervix is one of the biggest problems in public health in Latin America and the Caribbean, despite having an effective technology for secondary prevention. It is the most common cancer among women in the region and a major cause of morbidity and preventable death in the adult population. The incidence rates found in records of the region, such as Cali (Colombia), Recife (Brazil) and La Paz (Bolivia), are among the highest in the world. While morbidity from cervical cancer has greatly decreased in developed countries and various studies indicate that this is due early detection programs, this decrease does not seem to be happening in the vast majority of the American countries. Current programs of cervical cancer are based on the strategy of secondary prevention through cervical cytology screening technique, which has been used in many countries for over thirty years. For these programs to be effective they must having proper coverage and quality, and have to be integrated with the diagnosis and effective treatment of cases detected, in the same way with promotion and prevention.
