This case report describes the neural tube birth defect "occipital encephalocele." Male patient, product of first pregnancy born at 39 weeks, healhy 19 year-old mother, without prenatal care. There was a giant mass; height: 6.6cm and diameter: 15 cm in occipito-cervical region, the post-operative pathology lab reports: skin erosion area with immature nerve tissue with glial reaction, vascular proliferation and hemorrhagic areas. The transfontanelar ultrasound evidences bilateral hemorraghe grade III and the following congenital anomalies: a) occipital encephalocele with asymmetric hydrocephalus b) inter-atrial communication and inter-ventricular c) Right renal hypoplasia. One in five with a birth defect has more than a severe malformation. Pacients with encephalocele and hydrocephalus have a 60% mortality chance. The patient has a favorable evolution despite his many malformations. Diffusion is of vital importance to prevent these malformations and intensify prenatal care.
