Abstract

GUTIERREZ SUAREZ, JUAN ANDRÉS. Acción laxante de la parafina liquida. Univ. Cienc. Soc. [online]. 2014, n.12, pp. 50-58. ISSN 8888-8888.

This research paper aims to update the description of the ability of the Liquid Paraffin as a laxative, its mechanism of action, their therapeutic uses, pharmacodynamics pharmacokinetics, adverse effects, interactions, contraindications, dosage, and presentation. Laxatives are drugs that promote defecation, so that it speeds up the transit of feces along the colon and facilitate its removal from the rectum. They are classified according to the pharmaceutical form and according to their mechanism of action. Paraffin is a laxative lubricant type formed by mixtures of aliphatic hydrocarbon of long chain. It acts coating the feces of a hydrophobic layer which prevents the water contained in fecal matter to be absorbed by the intestine, remaining the feces pliable, which facilitates disposal. It is indicated in patients not to strain against the post defecation and rectal operative inter-ventions, hemorrhoids, anal fissures and especially the occasional constipations. The main adverse effects observed with the use of this group of drugs are: Decreased absorption of nutrients, decrease irritation soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and anal itching
