Abstract

This work was performed at the Laboratory No. 4 Christian University of Bolivia during the months of February to August 2007, sought to determine the hypoglycemic power plant Opuntia ficus-indica. Involved 30 laboratory white mice of the strain Balb / c to a ripe oíd age of four weeks oíd male sex, with an average weight between 29 to 32 g. The mice were divided into three groups of 10 mice each. Normal blood glucose levéis were determined by drawing blood from the lateral tail vein of mice in the morning for a period of three weeks. Each group was tested for a period of five weeks. Then endogenous hyperglycemia induced by glucose supply. One group received the extract from the Tuna, controlling blood sugar levéis between the first and fifth hour achieving a steady decline. In the control group was treated to lower blood sugar by giving each mouse a solution based on glibenclamide. The results are compared with the group receiving prickly pear extract, rapid hypoglycemic effect was observed with glibenclamide, while the prickly pear extract was more prolonged hypoglycemic effects.
