We present a literature review of syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that has remained prevalent in Bolivia and in recent years has gained notoriety piping. We describe briefly the classical as well as clinical signs and symptoms that characterize the different stages. Recent deveiopments are highiighted on the antigenic structure of this bacterium and the possibie immune responses generated in the human body.
